Cabo de Gata

Cabo de Gata (the „Cat Cape“) is not only a region in the South East of Spain (between Almeria and Mojácar) but also the name of a natural park known for its beautiful beaches and the rocks of volcanic origin. We arrived there late in the afternoon on August 10th, settled down at the wonderful Playa Monsul and took a refreshening bath (well deserved – after the city tour through Granada). I, however, felt like a bit of jogging and exploring the coastline, and left Susi reading on the beach. I went up a stony, dusty road to the lighthouse of the cape and enjoyed magnificent views of the coast and the beaches. The following photos give you an impression of the coastline North and South of the cape in the evening sun …

Granada

From August 9th to 10th we went to see Granada in our little Twingo and did the „Ganada-in-24-hours“ tour, starting at the Plaza de Bib-Arrambla, going up to the Alhambraby bus, visiting the Alcazaba and the gardens (Generalife) in the late afternoon and the Nasrid Palace in the night (10 p.m.) – all that interrupted by delicious breaks in the restaurants and bars (as shown on the photo, on which I strip down a „black pudding“ at the Plaza de Bib-Arrambla) … – The other day was dedicated to the shopping malls, the Cathedral and the Albaycin (the Moorish quarter).

From Granada we went on to the natural park Cabo de Gata.

Sunrise and Virgin Beaches

In Andalusia the situation has not changed too much: it is hot as always! However, there are higher waves which prevent bathing on some of the beaches especially those with stone beds on the coast.

On Sunday we delivered the young people safely at their respective hubs to their airports (Tim in Almeria and Lisi and Mike in San Javier, a small airport close to Murcia and the impressive „Mar Menor“ with its skyline). May they peacefully freeze in Halmstad and Salzburg (temperatures are said to be very low there).

The photos below show the somehow unavoidable sunrise scenery (at the balcony of „our“ home) as well as a scenery from the rocky coast in the South, where the „virgin beaches“ are to be found, which are target of my morning jogging tours along the „Ramblas“ (dry river beds) and our afternoon beach tours.

The tour to Granada is ahead of us (Wed/Thu) …

A Fistful of Dollars

Yesterday we paid a visit to „Mini Hollywood“, an area of Western film studios close to Tabernas. Many well known movies (espescially „Italo Western“) were produced there, among them „A Fistful of Dollars“, „Once upon a time in the West“ („Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod“), „Der Schuh des Manitu“, „Indiana Jones“, etc. Tim stayed at home to finish his thesis and also due to the seat limit in our Twingo.

Despite of the heat we had a great time strolling through the fake Western City, attended a Western show (after which Susi kissed one of the actors, a gringo who was shot by an evil character early in the play) and had a few cold beers in the saloon. I even tried the piano in the saloon, but only shortly escaped to be arrested by the sheriff who complained about my bad practice at Chopin nocturnes 😉

The photos show two gringos imitating a scene from „A Fistful of Dollars“ and one of the gringos later at rest in front of the house of the blacksmith – never mind the phallus – ehm, the cactus 😉 The third photo shows the highly rewarded actor of the Western show mentioned above – a dwarft with a hoarse voice, by the way.

The „Stripes“ of Mojácar Beach

„Mojácar Beach“ (which is different from „Mojácar Pueblo“, a pittoresque „white village“) is built in the following way: A stripe of sandy beach (some 10 kms long) is followed by the area of the „Chiringuitas“ (beach bars offering drinks, tapas and full menues, some of them even with live music or video presentations). The next stripe is the sea promenade, followed by the street. Next there is a stripe of shops, bars and restaurants, followed by a stripe of houses and smaller hotels(some of them – like ours – grouped around communal pools in settlements). The last stripe is simply desert (in our case the Sierra Cabrera, yet offering wonderful jogging areas in form of the dry river valleys, the so called „Ramblas“ – if you start early: at 9 am it is too hot!).

This time my photos show Mojácar pueblo (taken on one of my safaris when a wasp stang me in the neck) and „dos chicas“ (two girls) chilling out in one the Chiringuitos near the house. There is more to come …
