Home exchange in Mojácar – Summary

Once again – after Brighton, Barcelona, Montreal and Malmö – our home exchange with family Ortega-Aranda from Madrid was a very nice experience: We enjoyed the time in Mojácar and found many good reasons for the position of our house – their holiday home – being ideal: the private communal garden and the swimming pool for immediate refreshment and relaxation, the wonderful terrace surrounded by plants and flowers of various Southern origin and appearance, the short distance to the sea, the close Chiringuitos (beach bars which – just to mention it – are not distributed equally in that quality along Mojácar beach), the short distance to the next convenient shopping centres and an Internet corner „next door“. Not far away we found the „virgin beaches“ for nudist as well as textile bathing, Mojácar pueblo and the „Parque Comercial“. One never has to care at all about the weather in that area, the only drawback even being that it is too hot for true sportive holidays 😉

It was also a nice – and maybe last time – experience to spend (parts of) our vacation together with our grown-up children Lisi and Mike as well as Lisi’s Swedish boy friend Tim. We had a great time together, but also individually, and any house work – be it cooking, cleaning and shopping – was shared between the five of us. And there were hot fights for the „minigolf championship“, the „pool volleyball masters“ and the „Carcassonne tournaments“ (the latter being a game brought along by Tim from Sweden or Norway).

Ruta Transcabrera

Quite near to our home there was a boutique (!!) renting bikes at reasonable prices („Susana’s“). I got a brand new mountainbike and decided to test it on the „Ruta Transcabrera“, a round trip of about 60km leading up to and around the summits of the Sierra Cabrera, thereby offering great views of the coast around Mojácar and Carboneras and passing some of the lonesome farm houses in the desert of this mountain range.

I started early and for five hours the only people I should meet were the teenagers on their way home from the disco at 6.30 a.m. in the dawn. So my only companions on that route where the sun, the dust and the rocks – not to speak of sweat and thirst …

Cabo de Gata

Cabo de Gata (the „Cat Cape“) is not only a region in the South East of Spain (between Almeria and Mojácar) but also the name of a natural park known for its beautiful beaches and the rocks of volcanic origin. We arrived there late in the afternoon on August 10th, settled down at the wonderful Playa Monsul and took a refreshening bath (well deserved – after the city tour through Granada). I, however, felt like a bit of jogging and exploring the coastline, and left Susi reading on the beach. I went up a stony, dusty road to the lighthouse of the cape and enjoyed magnificent views of the coast and the beaches. The following photos give you an impression of the coastline North and South of the cape in the evening sun …

Granada

From August 9th to 10th we went to see Granada in our little Twingo and did the „Ganada-in-24-hours“ tour, starting at the Plaza de Bib-Arrambla, going up to the Alhambraby bus, visiting the Alcazaba and the gardens (Generalife) in the late afternoon and the Nasrid Palace in the night (10 p.m.) – all that interrupted by delicious breaks in the restaurants and bars (as shown on the photo, on which I strip down a „black pudding“ at the Plaza de Bib-Arrambla) … – The other day was dedicated to the shopping malls, the Cathedral and the Albaycin (the Moorish quarter).

From Granada we went on to the natural park Cabo de Gata.

Sunrise and Virgin Beaches

In Andalusia the situation has not changed too much: it is hot as always! However, there are higher waves which prevent bathing on some of the beaches especially those with stone beds on the coast.

On Sunday we delivered the young people safely at their respective hubs to their airports (Tim in Almeria and Lisi and Mike in San Javier, a small airport close to Murcia and the impressive „Mar Menor“ with its skyline). May they peacefully freeze in Halmstad and Salzburg (temperatures are said to be very low there).

The photos below show the somehow unavoidable sunrise scenery (at the balcony of „our“ home) as well as a scenery from the rocky coast in the South, where the „virgin beaches“ are to be found, which are target of my morning jogging tours along the „Ramblas“ (dry river beds) and our afternoon beach tours.

The tour to Granada is ahead of us (Wed/Thu) …
